I always advise my couples to ask their venue to place their wedding cake in a prominent position, at the drinks reception.

This way you get to use the cake as part of your decor.

If you don't do this, you run the risk of paying a lot of money for a very elaborate cake that no one even notices.

The traditional photo of cutting the cake could also be done during the drinks reception, to keep formalities to a minimum.
